For any person there exists equally a sense of self and a sense of place. Both senses are dependent on each other.
In the built environment, sense of place, like sense of self, is perceived as a quality. Quality is not dependent on quantity or possessions.
If sense of place is as fundamental as sense of self, then a sense of place precedes even basic needs such as food, warmth and shelter. That is why I maintain that the only purpose of architecture is to build the sense of place.
